Discipleship Practices (Part 1)

November 21, 2025

Have you ever met a saint? Most of us might think of people like Mother Teresa or St. Francis, but the truth is, saints are simply disciples who’ve finished the journey of growing close to God. And that means every one of us is called to be a future saint.

Discipleship isn’t a one-time decision or a checklist you can complete. It’s a lifelong journey of learning, falling, growing, and returning—again and again—to Jesus. It’s about letting God reshape our hearts to look more like His.

At St. Ignatius, we talk about seven practices that help us grow as disciples. They’re not rules; they’re ways to live out our love for God. This week, we focused on two:

  • Personal prayer & Scripture
  • Invest and Invite

Prayer is how we spend time with the One who loves us most. It’s where friendship with Jesus grows. Scripture, meanwhile, is our family story. It tells us who God is and how He’s been working through time—even before we were born—to bring us closer to Himself. Reading it reminds us where we’ve come from and where we’re headed.

Then there’s invest and invite. It’s about caring enough to build relationships and share our faith naturally. Think of Andrew, who met Jesus and immediately brought his brother Simon (who became Peter) to meet Him. Andrew didn’t preach a sermon—he just said, “Come and see.” That’s what we’re called to do: love people, walk with them, and invite them to discover Jesus for themselves.

In the end, discipleship is about journeying together. None of us walks the road to heaven alone. We learn, pray, stumble, and rise again—side by side—as brothers and sisters, growing into the saints God created us to be.
